Palm Oil is certified according to specific criteria from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the aim of which is to reduce negative impacts of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities.
Palm oil is among the world’s most consumed food ingredients and is utilised in about half of all packaged food products.
Through their fruits, oil palms are highly efficient and produce oil year-round. It is the highest-yielding vegetable oil crop, needing less than half the land required by other oil-producing crops to generate the same amount of oil. One hectare planted with oil palms can yield an average of up to six tons of oil per year, helping to make palm oil the least expensive vegetable oil in the world.
In 2008, the RSPO developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). When properly applied, these criteria can help to minimise negative impacts such as deforestation.
Control Union Certifications is an RSPO approved certification body, accredited by ASI, and will execute the RSPO certification of sustainable palm oil in line with procedures specified in the RSPO certification scheme. Control Union Certifications BV is accredited by ASI for this scheme under registration nr. ASI-ACC-017 and Control Union (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is accredited under nr. ASI-ACC-069.
